Reclaimed Wood

For both environmental and aesthetic reasons, repurposed wood provides the visual warmth of wood with a lower ecological footprint.

Wood recycling is the process of breaking down old wood to make an entirely new, usable products. Popularized in the early 1990s as a response to deforestation and climate change, timber suppliers and consumers searched for a more sustainable timber source.

Reclaimed wood is any wood used for building or furniture that’s already served a purpose in a previous life. Such antique lumber often comes with a unique history, such as hand-hewn beams from century-old barns. Used primarily for decoration and home building, reclaimed wood can add dimension to siding, architectural details, cabinetry, furniture, and flooring.

Programmable Cement

Invented about 200 years ago, cement is now used in most buildings, road projects, and support systems.  Now, scientists from Rice University have improved the manufacturing process. The researchers have developed a way to “program’ the particles of cement, an ingredient in concrete, into shapes that make them stronger. Now less porous and more resistant to chemicals and water, they are less harmful to the environment.

Plus, because this new concrete is much stronger, it lasts longer. This means less concrete is needed to make more durable buildings. Look for other improvements, including types of which are bendable, fire-resistant concrete, or even self-healing concrete, which uses bacteria to heal cracks.

Materials From Organic Waste

Many types of organic waste can be converted into construction materials that reduce the amount of material in the waste stream. For example, mushrooms can substitute for particle board and Styrofoam for insulation. Banana fibers are used to create biodegradable textiles and carpets while seeds, stalks, and leaves can be used to form acoustic panels.

Wool Bricks

Kiln-firing traditional bricks to increase their strength creates greenhouse gases and airborne toxins. Developed in Spain and Scotland, wool bricks are made by adding a natural polymer found in seaweed to the clay of the wool brick to strengthen it. And, because they dry hard, they reduce the gases produced by kiln-firing as well as the energy needed to fire them.
